Question by Bizket: What is the best way to teach a dog the “stay” command?
I have been working on training my dog Aiden. He’s been doing good and is a very fast learner. He learned how to sit, lay down, and shake in just a few days.
But he wont stay still long enough for me to teach him the “stay” command. He’ll stay still long enough for me to say stay then he’s jumping around again.
What can I do to teach him how to stay?
What worked best for you?

Try having someone hold his collar while you slowly walk away with a treat saying”Stay” when you stop walking have the person holding him let the dog go and let him eat the treat. Good luck:)

work for very short steps and hlp the dog succeed if necessary by holding them in position for a few seconds and then realizing them. It is very important that before teaching a stay that you have taught a release

Lower your time and distance criteria. Put him in a sit, stand in front of him, use a hand signal like your palm facing him, tell him stay, and give a treat. Repeat a few times and stop. Go back to it after a few minutes, and this time back up a foot. Repeat a few times, and give it a break. Increase distance and time. If he breaks his stay, don’t correct, even verbally. Just put him back in his spot, and back up your training to the last time you were successful. End on a good note. End on a good note. End on a good note. < – this is important
For me, food reward and hungry dogs makes for much faster training for this.

I ask for a Sit, and then feed the dog with treats as if it’s a slot machine. I gradually slow down the amount of treats and how often they’re given….at this point, I am still right in front of the dog. Once the dog can stay when the treats have slowed down to once per 30 seconds, I start to take a step away…..I literally back up and then straight back to the dog. I gradually increase the distance away in the same way I reduced the treats. I aim for the dog to succeed. IF the dog should break the stay, I just put him back, and start again. Takes time, but hasn’t failed me yet in many dogs.

patience and repetition.
sit, reward stay, praise
take a step back if still stay praise reward.
get stepping back till you are out of sight.
but don’t reward if they move the body.
or put in down position and stay. same thing.

No, really. That video is brilliant. Watch it. My Pug used to be able to stay but he wouldn’t stay if i walked off.
Now he stays if i run away screaming nonsense, run towards him or in a circle around him. If i stand there saying nonsense. Even if i say ‘Milo, come here!’ he won’t. ‘Til i say release. Because i’ve taught him to not move out of a stay until i say RELEASE. No matter what goes past, what i say or what i do. Til i say that word. I can get him to do downs from a distance now.

Try this method: command your dog to “sit” and then slowly take a step backward, keep an eye contact with him, and command him to stay, if he doesnt move, reward him. continue on stepping backward and command him to stay, if he doesnt move, praise or reward him. Eventually he will learn not to move when commanded to stay.
